Mimicry

She looks up from her book briefly, idly nibbling her lower lip before diving into words again. She shifts her weight, right foot hooked on the back of her left as she leans against the pillar. People pass by, some with lingering looks in her direction as the dark crawls on the floor, gradually replacing the day.

She looks up again, head further up this time, eyes trying to find the familiar amidst the noise. A quick glance to her wrist and then back to the comfort of pages.

“Hey”

She turns to see him smiling and her palms turn cold. She puts her book in her bag and her hair falls forward. He lightly runs his fingers through it.

“I like it. “

The cold travels to her fingertips.

“It’s nice on you”

She mumbles some words of gratitude and dismissal. He laughs and hails a cab. Inside, she leans on his arm hesistantly as he rests his hand on her thigh.

The shades of the sunset fall on her shoulders in strands. He looks on outside, gaze held by the colors of evening’s birth.
