Appendix

Your fingers around the key and the sound of the pedestal lock clicking in place. The feel of the carpet under your feet as you take your heels off. Slipping into flats, walking away from the inarticulate laughter under the fluorescent lights.

The sound of the elevator bell, your footstep hushed by the rain. The lights on the drenched roads and her smile on your mind. The hiss of the bus door opening, the night framed by the window.

The umbrella snapping open, raindrops tap against the fabric. Dogs barking from behind closed gates, cats causing soaked grass leaves to rustle. The scent of the soil. The lamp posts aglow on the sidewalk.

The creak of the door as you close it behind you. The flickering of the bulb before color spills onto the room. Water rushing through the pipes, running through your fingers. Your tongue on your dry lips and then the minty taste of toothpaste. The sudden dark on the furniture as you switch the light off.

Crisp sheets, a cat coiled on the pillow. The moonlight beside you on the bed.

A ringing phone. Her voice in your ear. Her smile on your mind. A smile on your face.
